Yet More Pics!?
For some reason I have been obsessed with Dioramas lately. So here are some more pics of my latest efforts.

New base for the Iwo Jima '45 Dio.

I was nearly finished with my little diorama when a friend of mine who had recently returned from a project on the island of Iwo Jima,
pointed out that the sand there is volcanic in origin and therefore BLACK, not white. Aaargh! Oh well back to the drawing board.

Iwo Jima 1945
I created this piece for the father of a good friend of mine. His father is the last survivor of his battalion and I thought a small dioramic scene might be an appropriate gift. He was the flamethrower for his squad.......
Base is the usual chunk of blueboard
Construction follows my usual technique of hotwire cutting foam to whatever shape suits my needs. It is glued together with carpenters glue.
When the glue is dried, the base is cut to its final shape with a hotwire and textured with a butane lighter.
This smooths the surface and also gives a nice plastic "skin" for the base.
Marine green is Not the colour to blend in here!
Since I was using scrap blueboard for the base, I needed something to fill the gaps on the edges. I mixed up a batch of portland cement and wiped it around the edge with an old credit card.
Since the sand is black anyway and I always paint the edges black, I just hosed the whole thing with acrylic flat black paint.
A bit of ground cover keeps it from being quite so stark.
I basically smear the painted base with carpenters glue and sprinkle fine sand over it until I got good coverage. Since the sand needed to be black, it got another coat of paint after the glue had dried. A mist coat of a light buff colour gives a bit of contrast.
